Syria war shifts in favor of government forces: Assad

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad says the war in the country has shifted strongly in favor of government forces fighting against foreign-sponsored militants. Speaking to university staff and students in the Syrian capital Damascus on Sunday, Assad said government forces have made continuous gains against foreign-backed Takfiri militants in the Arab country. The Syrian president also said that there is a growing popular awareness about the goals behind aggressions against Syria. Assad's remarks come as army forces have retaken many strategic areas from militants across the country in recent months. On Saturday, the Syrian army took more ground from militants in the countryside of Damascus. Syrian army units destroyed terrorist hideouts in the northern entrance of the town of al-Mleiha, in Eastern al-Ghouta. They reportedly killed a number of terrorists and discovered a vast net of tunnels the terrorists had been using to move around and transport weapons and ammunition. Meanwhile, the Syrian army has also launched successful offensives against militants in the city of Dara’a and the Homs countryside, in the west. Syria has been experiencing unrelenting militancy since March 2011. The Western powers and their regional allies -- especially Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Turkey -- are said to be supporting the militants operating inside Syria. Reports say that more than 150,000 people have so far been killed and millions of others displaced because of the ongoing violence.
