Iranians mourn the death of Fatima Zahra, Prophet Mohammad's daughter and one of the most inspiring figures for Shia Muslims. Black flags have been raised to mark the martyrdom anniversary of one of the most revered women in Islam. Fatima died in the holy city of Medina in current Saudi Arabia. Shias believe that she died while trying to protect her husband Imam Ali from his enemies. That's why they regard her as a martyr. The exact place of her burial still remains a mystery after more than 14 centuries. In all the Iranian cities, and on a rainy day in Tehran, ceremonies were held to mourn loss of the first lady of Islam. Fatima is given many titles by Muslims to show their admiration of her moral characteristics. The most used title is "al-Zahra", meaning "the shining one", that's why she is commonly referred to as Fatima Zahra. Shias regard her as a perfect woman who gave birth to figures such as Imam Hussein who is the most outstanding symbol of freedom and martyrdom for the Shias. Black-wearing Shias pay their respects to Fatima Zahra through prayers. Mourners believe that shedding tears for their holy mother will be rewarded in the hereafter. Quran experts say that Islam's holy book has referred to Fatima at least twice without mentioning her name. Muslims regard Fatima as a loving and devoted daughter, mother, wife, a sincere Muslim, and a role model for women. Shias' love for Prophet Muhammad’s progeny will continue forever, and they believe through such affection, Islamic teachings of the Prophet and the 12 Imams will be protected.
